On the connotations and translation of individualism from the differences between Chinese and Western cultures

本文对Individualism的内涵及其中文翻译进行了讨论.西方学者Samovar,Porter＆Stefani(1998)、Brown&Levinson(1987)以及Sollon& Sollon(1995)指出了个人存在的社会共性与个体异性矛盾共存的特征以及集体主义和个性主义在东西方文化中的地位.本文认为Individualism体现的是社会对个体异性的认可与尊重,是个性的张扬,因此,建议将其译为'个性主义'.

This paper aims to discuss the connotations and Chinese translation of the term individualism. Western scholars such as Samovar, Porter & Stefani(1998), Brown & Levinson(1987)and Sollon & Scollon (1995) point out the co-existence of similarity and individuality, and the status of collectivism and individualism in Eastern and Western cultures. The authors of this paper argue that individualism represents the social recognition and respect for individuality. Accordingly, the authors offer a new Chinese translation of the term individualism.
