As an important literary magazine in the early period of the Republic of China, the Short Story Monthly boasted a group of outstanding contributors from 1910 to 1920. In correspondence to the cultural pluralism of the time, these writers found themselves in a state of complicated mentality. They were overwhelmed with sadness, moral hesitation, patriotism, worries, self-reflection and spiritual abandonment.
