Narrative timing is an important layer writers employ in the text of their narratives.In reading the characteristics of Shen Congwen's narrative timing, we may find that he is trying to display through his collective recollections of the world in Western Hunan the eternal beauty of humanity and human relations in that region. Shen also deploys the methods of relaxation and pause to reveal the serenity and leisure in his narrative of Western hunal, with an emphasis on his idyllic perspective of narration. But it is just the deployment of such a narrative timing that betrays Shen's dilemma between ideal and reality.
