The Fall of the House of Usher is a classic of the master of psychological horror Edgar Allan Poe. It depicts the mental disintegration and collapse of the protagonist. The parallelism between the medieval legend The Mad Trist and the return of Madeline from her crypt is often taken as a somewhat clumsy literary device that rather spoils the effect of the tale. Similarly, the narrator is usually consigned to the residual category of literary device. However, the interpretation of the tale in terms of the archetype theory of Jung and Neumann shows that both narrator and The Mad Trist are not only integral parts of the story but essential to a full understanding of it.
