中西文化结合观发展经历了多次论战。“中体西用”论失败后，科玄论战中，玄学派所提出的东方文化的特性问题却具有更加重要的意义。自由主义与新儒家的对立也从相反的意义上说明了问题的解决既不能单纯地学习西方，也不可能从传统中找到现成的答案。中国的马克思主义者在寻求中西文化的结合过程中较为合理地解决了结合点的问题。

Many debates have been made about the historical developing view of the Chinese and Western cultural combination. After the failure of the theory 'appliance of the western upon the Chinese as dominance' the metaphysical school put forward the more significant viewpoint about the special characters in the oriental culture. The contrast between the free and Confucians has belied the workableness of the idea held by the free and made clearly about the difficulty and complexity: simply to learn the west cannot be adopted and to try to find the resolution out of the tradition is not practical either. The Chinese Marxists have found more scientifically the combining point between the two cultures Chinese and Western in the course of exploration.
