Objective This study is to characterize serum levels of S-100β protein in patients undergoing cardiac operations with cardiopulmonary bypass , with the focus on expression of serum S-100β protein in cardiac operation with cardiac arrest and beating heart. Methods Twenty-three patients undergoing cardiac operation with cardiopulmonary bypass were divided into two groups: cardiac arrest group and beating heart group. The level of S-100β protein in jugular vein were measured during the perioperative period. Results (1)During cardiac operation, serum S-100β protein concentrations changed with the course of cardiopulmonary bypass. (2)At the termination of CPB, cardiac arrest group had longer average cardiopulmonary bypass time(85.2±20.2min), but no statistic difference from that of beating heart group(62.8±16.4 min )(P>0.05). Accordingly, cardiac arrest group had higher average S-100β levels (1.65±0.52μg/L), but were not statistically different from beating heart group (1.59±0.84μg/L) (P>0.05). Conclusion (1) Cardiopulmonary bypass can increase serum S-100β level , and they have positive significant correlation each other. (2) Whichever measure to be taken, cardiac arrest or beating heart, doesn’t have different effect on expression of serum S-100β protein.
