Inspiration is a creative psychological phenomenon in human thinking. Opportunity refers to the unexpected or accidental findings in scientific practice, and hence leads to breakthrough in technology and theory. This article reviewed the role of inspiration and opportunity in the inventions of microscope, laser photocoagulation therapy, corneal refractive surgery, phacoemulsification and vitrectomy instrument, as well as their significance in the development of ophthalmology.
