A Brief Interpretation of the Inscription on Lai Pan (Tray)

2003年元月,宝鸡眉县杨家村新出土西周青铜器27件,为本世纪初重大考古发现。其中逨盘铭文372字,是最重要的一件国宝。逨盘的价值是:第一,可补文献之缺;第二,为西周青铜器断代提供了标准器;第三,映证了《史记·周本纪》所载成、康二王时期西周与鬼方的关系。

In January 2003, 27 bronze wares were unearthed in Yangjia Village, Meixian County, Baoji, which is a major archaeological discovery at the beginning of the new century. Among them, Lai Pan (a tray), which can be regarded as a national treasure, has an inscription on it with 372 Chinese characters. Lai Pan has the following values: First, it can supplement the relevant literature. Second, it is a valuable regulator for the study of the break-off period of the ancient Chinese history. Third, combined with Historical Records, the Book of Songs and other inscriptions on the bronze wares of the West Zhou Dynasty, it can prove that the record in the Zhou History of Historical Records is true about the relationship between West Zhou Dynasty and Guifang (an ancient sheikhdom in today's Yulin, Shaanxi) during Kings Cheng and Kang Period. Fourth, this paper briefly analyzes different meanings of the Chinese Character '方' (with pinyin as fang) in the inscription on Lai Pan when it is written in different ways.
