Dongguan Starts Operating City

随人们去说吧,“大加工厂”也好,“文化沙漠”也罢,这些名字都将以过去式的形式与“东莞”联系在一起。东莞要经营城市了,一切以城市的名义,继续征战于全球经济的沙场之上。

Being famous as the world's leading production and export base of computer parts and the 3rd largest exportation city in China, Dongguan is also connected to other descriptions, such as the Large Factory and the Culture Desert. Though as a manufacturing base, Dongguan has got an international fame, it still has to show more. For twenty years, Dongguan has developed into an international manufacturing base from a land flowing with milk and honey, due to its high connectivity to Hong Kong and mainland cities. It has established strong industry clusters with a wide range of supporting industries and flexible production arrangements for MNCs and SMEs. Now, there are over 14000 foreign-invested factories located in Dongguan, 33 of which are Fortune 500 companies. Dongguan has a population of more than 6,500,000, only one third of which are original residents. However, Dongguan is suffering from this kind of development. In fact, the process of industrialization has been faster than that of urbanization in Dongguan, and the development of business is faster than that of the culture. On the other hand, more and more mainland provinces have the same or even more preferential policies than Dongguan to attract the attention of the foreign companies. Under this kind of pressure, Dongguan starts its second upgrade of industry. More important, it intends to be an international manufacturing city, not just a base. Dongguan begins to operate the city, in wish to be mentioned with Silicon Valley, Route 128, Bangalore in the future.
