NEC通讯的“中国疗法”在帮助其重新确立竞争位置的同时,也是对日本企业传统海外发展模式的一次挑战。
The Chinese therapy which Mr. Lu Lei adopts to cure weak points of NEC Communications and regain its competitive advantage in Chinese mar- ket really challenges the traditional mode of growth of Japanese enterprises in overseas market. Mr. Lu Lei became the president of NEC Communications (China) Limited in May this year after he resigned the position of the general manager of Motorola's Personal Communication Department in China. Many people advise him to be cautious because he is the first president of a Japanese company in China who is a Chinese and has no Japanese passport. Japanese companies are notorious for their conservativeness about localization. So the appointment is a great risk both for him and the company. But in the tide of globalization, success of an overseas company depends on how it can take advantage of local talents. It's obvious NEC is trying to change the tradition. Some big changes are taking place after Lu becomes the president, but conflicts may burst in the future because of the differences between American management style and Japanese culture. If the two sides cannot coordinate and be adaptive each other, the transformation in NEC may fail.
