A Brief Comment on the Academic Value of Biographies of Eminent Monks by HUI Jiao

南朝梁慧皎所撰《高僧传》是我国宗教传记文学的典范作品,是六朝众僧传中仅存的垂则后世的完整僧史。他的作品取得不凡成就,实有赖于他广博精深的学术修养。这在他的作品,尤其是论赞中,我们至少可以看到三个突出表现:一是对佛教史有独到精湛的识见;二是对宗教有比较客观的态度和理性的认识;三是对有关佛教的许多问题有深识灼见。

Biographies of Eminent Monks written by HUI Jiao at Nan Dynasty is one of the cannons in religious biographical literature in our country and is the only complete one passed down among the biographies of monks in the Six Dynasties.The extraodinary achievement of this series of biographies is indebted to HUI Jiao's profound academic qualities which are embodied in his in_depth knowledge of Buddhist history,his objective attitude toward and rational judgement on religion,and his unique ideas on many Buddhist issues.
