Grammar plays a key role in language study. Role and Reference Grammar is different from the traditional grammatical rules in that it focuses on the pragmatic and semantic functions of languages. This paper examines the issue of the explanatory power of Role and Reference Grammar to the Chinese language from a linguistic perspective. It starts with a brief introduction to the basic theory of Role and Reference Grammar. Then the explanatory power of Role and Reference Grammar is discussed. We end the study with the conclusion that Role and Reference Grammar is powerful enough to describe and explain the grammatical problems in the Chinese language.
