该文在指出以往对苔丝形象悲剧意义解读的偏颇的基础上,着重运用现代批评理论中的女性主义批评进行重新解读,认为苔丝形象的悲剧意义主要在于向自古以来、举世皆然的性别统治发出诘难,敦促人们去认真反思和努力根除这种弥漫于社会文明中积重难返的痼疾.

Based on the discovery of some previous mistakes made in understanding the tragic image of Tess, this paper lays much emphasis on the re-understanding of it with a feminist approach of contemporary literary critique, argues that the tragic image of Tess derives from her disobedience to the long-dominant traditional sexism, and urges that this overspreading chronic malady among modern civilization be abolished through careful consideration and practical actions.
