Verbal communication is a kind of socio-psychological interactive behavior characterized by linguistic adaptation. The interactive sides each have their communicative needs. By default, the rational communicators take these needs into consideration when they choose the content and manner of their speech. Given a particular set of communicative needs, they normally make adequate pragmatic effort to accommodate these needs in order to maintain the equilibrium of the interaction. This is what we purport to postulate as the hypothesis of pragmatic balance. It is pre-sumed that successful communication hinges on the maintenance of such a balance. Demonstrably, the hypothesis rooted in the pervasive socio-psychological interaction can account for the formation of a particular communicative style at any point of the verbal communication.
