摘要
对小说<帕米拉>的传统解读,片面地强调帕米拉的作用,认为她坚持自己的贞操美德,最后使主人B先生深受感动,而娶之为妻,正所谓"美德的回报";但却忽略了另一重要人物--B先生.本文从福柯惩罚和规训的理论角度出发,认为B先生多次诱惑帕米拉的目的实际上是对她进行考察,借以辨别她到底属于哪一种女人(妻子/妓女),从而更一步规训她,使之更加符合好妻子的标准、更加顺从B先生所代表的封建父权制度.
Traditional reading of Pamela overemphasizes the active role of the titular heroine who has insisted on her own virtues and moved Mr. B and, finally, is accepted as his wife, which echoes the subtitle- Virtues Rewarded. However, that interpretation pays little attention to Mr. B. In the light of Michel Foucault's concept of “discipline and punish”, this paper argues that Mr.B's constant seduction, in fact, is a patriarchal examination of grading and disciplining so that Pamela can be tempered into a docile “angel in the house” in accordance with patriarchal expectations.
