认知处理经济原则是指语篇处理操作中的一种调控原则,它对心智中的知识在流向语言表层的过程中进行管理,以追求语篇效率.语篇效率则是一个交际权衡问题,其实质是,在语篇利用过程中能以最小的认知努力获取最大的处理回报.认知处理经济原则与语篇稳定性原则和语篇信息度原则之间存在相互制约的关系.过分强调经济原则会影响语篇的稳定性,而一味追求稳定性则会降低语篇的信息度,故经济原则常以弱式发生作用.语篇效率手段是经济原则的表现形式.

Economy principle is a major consideration in the cognitive processing of text. It works in the management and regulation of the flow of knowledge up to the surface. It stipulates that all knowledge is organized in storage as a unified, heavily interconnected and non-redundant network. The principle is recognized in favor of textual efficiency, which is a TRADE-OFF between redundant storage and rapid search with respect to information. Though stated in extremely strong terms, economy principle does work in a weaker version practically, and ECONOMY is realized by the proper devices for textual efficiency. It is also important that practice of economy principle should not violate stability and informativity of text. On the contrary, economy is in compromise with stability and informativity.
