翻译是一项艰巨的工作,因为它要求译者对异文化作出理解。很多情况下,文化上的沟通要难于语言本身的沟通。一旦与外语文本发生关联,人们就被迫进入外域文化中。此时译者本族文化所提供的理解基调完全失效。本文仅以美国总统乔治·布什的就职演说为例,说明历史文化背景对于翻译工作的重要性。

Translation is a hard work owing to the difficulty of understanding a different culture.Many times,there are more barricades in culture understanding rather than language itself.Whenever we are concerned with a text in foreign languages,we are forced into a different environment of culture.What we have in our own culture as a background of understanding is out of work.Therefore,translation is a bridge not between languages but between thoughts.This article just takes the inaugural address of George Bush,the President of USA,as an example to illustrate the historical and cultural problems in translation.
