In Degradation by YU Da-fu, 'He', as the hero of the short story, is much concerned but most controversial. 'He' shows an unusual characteristic of melancholy and supercilious indignation, thus producing serious 'self-refusal' and 'characteristic obstruction'. The reflective qualities of his character, such as consistence and variety, unitary and intricacy, frankness and reservation, display his characteristic colorfulness and attractiveness. Degradation, regarded as the first 'alien' short story in China, opens up new ways of creating modern Chinese short stories and has a great, profound significance.
