This paper presents a review of the research progress on the multi-wavelength erbium-doped fiber lasers for density wavelength division multiplexing transmission systems. The various methods of implementing a multi-wavelength operation were introduced, and the principles, experiments and results were described and analyzed in detail, and the future trends for MW-EDFL were given.
