With the development of larger smelting furnaces, there have been increased efficiencies and economies of scale, resulting in lower unit production costs. This basic principle must apply to all ferroalloy producers in all countries. However, ferroalloy producers in different countries have tended to standardise on different size furnaces. Are there economic reasons for the different size selection between countries? Is a larger furnace better than a smaller one? Is one larger furnace better than two smaller ones?In this paper a simple economic model is developed to predict, from an investment perspective, if there is always benefit to be had from larger furnaces.
