刘向的散文,无论是奏疏,还是《说苑》、《新序》、《列女传》等著作,其写作的直接目的,都是为了给统治者提供鉴诫,以挽救当时日益衰颓的国势,所以有很强的针对性。但刘向散文对社会现实的批评,又不局限于成帝时代,而是对整个西汉的社会弊端作了较全面的针砭与批评。

The immediate purpose of Liu-xiang's proses,regardless of his memorials to the emperor and his works such as Collection of Stories,New Recount and Biographies of Women in Ancient China,offers the rulers lessons,so as to rescue national affairs.For this his prose has an definite aim.His criticism to social reality isn't confined to the days of Hancheng emperor.He criticizes all corrupt practices of the xihan Dynasty.
