Transference of Socio-Cultural Messages in Chinese-English Translation

本文论述了汉译英中如何对待社会文化因素的影响,处理东西方不同文化环境造成的语义差异,通过采用科学的、 可操作的翻译手段,在各种语境中解决文化差异造成的语义缺省和冲突,完成语言文化内涵功能意义上的转换。

The social and cultural differences between the source and the target discourse necessarily cause semantic defaults and contextual conflicts in translation, and the need to negotiate these differences always poses a daunting challenge to translators. Using ChineseEnglish translation as an example, this paper takes stock of the available strategies for meeting this challenge, in particular those for smoothing away the difficulties in transferring connotations.
