Garden images in the English Renaissance poetry are mostly based on the features of the normal garden. The differences between both sides of the garden hedge or wall, and the contrast between the garden and the wilderness, provide for the poet many a symbol fraught with social, political, religious, or moral significance. To cultivate a garden is often conceived of as a simulation of the Garden of Eden, and garden images are frequently applied to the Christian paradise themes, reflecting man's yearning for the ideal paradise to which he will eventually journey, or for a lofty spiritual state of which he is in ardent pursuit.
