The Choice of History ——On Lu Xun's Theory of Literal Translation

鲁迅的"直译"观是中国译学理论史上的丰碑。鲁迅认为翻译中改变原作本性,不但对不起作者,也对不起读者,强调在翻译中保存原文的口吻,原作的风姿,认为这种译法,不仅能输入新的内容,也能输入新方法。

The theory of literal translation proposed by Lu Xun is a monumental work in the history of Chinese translation study. Lu Xun emphasized literal translation, however he did not deny the function of free translation totally. He regarded free translation dialectically. The historic significance of his stress on 'literal translation' is clarified by analyzing the social historical background, the translator's attitude towards the target culture and his aims from historical perspective.
