Different semantic structures of verbs between English and Chinese and the effects on passive expressions

英汉两种语言的动词概念化方式具有系统的、规律性的差别 ,由此造成了两种语言的被动格式等语法特点的不同。本文运用数学物理中的矢量概念 ,对动词的概念结构进行分析 ,据此揭示两种语言动词概念化方式的系统差异及其带来的句法后果。本文再次证明 ,不同语言有不同的语义结构 ,而不同的语义结构又在很大程度上决定了不同语言的语法面貌。

The conceptualizations of verbs of English and Chinese differ from each other, s ystematically and regularly, which is responsible for the different expressions of passives and others between the two languages. By employing the notion of “v ector” in mathematics and mechanics, this paper aims to identify the different conceptual structures of verbs between these two languages and to explain the re lated grammatical manifestations. The present analysis has demonstrated that eve ry language has its own semantic structure which to a great extent determines th e overall feature of its grammar.
