在美国城市化进程中 ,美国西部的大多数城市是伴随着西部各地区的开发过程成长起来的 ,并由此形成了矿业城镇、牧业城镇、铁路城镇、农业城镇等不同类型的城市。多功能城市的出现 ,为西部经济的发展创造了极为有利的条件。我国西部城市化道路的选择可以参考美国西部城市化的经验 ,走开发与城市化同步的具有我国特色的西部城市化道路 :充实和提高大城市的功能和实力 ,发挥城市经济场的辐射作用 ,向郊区或更大的腹地扩散 ,在区域经济中起中心作用 ;以大城市为依托 ,建立经济区 ,然后逐步向中小城市推进 ;以现有的城市为据点 ,向外发展 ;依托交通干线 ,发展城市带 ,整合城市密集区。
