Through a description of the three phases of growth of CCTV's regular 'Half the Sky' program, this essay points out that an important task for women's media is to help women understand their independent character and the importance of their existence, and the need for them to propel the development of the entire society through promotion of their own development. In women's development, the crux of the matter lies in gender equality. Women's media, therefore, must shake off the yoke of male supremacy culture and examine both themselves and society from the angle of gender equality, otherwise women's media will also become a carrier for the discrimination against women. The consciousness of gender equality is not innate, nor is it a monopoly of the female sex; it can be acquired through learning. The gender consciousness of a decision maker, in particular, is of paramount importance to the developmental orientation of a women's program. The essay also cites four other programs to show how the 'Half the Sky' program uses the gender equality angle to guide TV practice.
