On the basis of a survey of the use of the Internet and its influence in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Changsha in 2001, the paper discusses the issue about the new communication technology and women's rights. The results of the survey show that the new communication technology has changed passive audience into active users to a certain extent and increased their opportunities to exchange information and express themselves, but women have received much less benefits than men. The survey shows that women users are less than men, and their using time, frequency and source on the Internet are less than men too. It is possible, therefore, to increase gender inequality in real life. In view of this, the paper puts forth some suggestions for increasing women's ability and chance to aquire information, and promoting information flow on a fair basis.
