Saussure's view of the Language as a system of signs and his dicisions made between the four dichotomies—the signifier and the signified, language and parole, synchronic and diachronic approaches to language study, and syntagmatic and paradigmatic relations, have exerted a significant influence on structuralism, semiotics, and deconstructionalism that followed. The formalistic nature of his theory fundamentally determines the nature of the latter three as formalistic as well.
