During the first decade of the 20th century,a group of magazine journalists and novelists etc.,nick- named as the muckrakers, tried to expose the dark side of the American society, which educated the American people about the widespread corruption that had attended the growth of industrialism. The muckrakers have been credited with laying the groundwork for many of the progressive reforms of the day. The Muckrake Movement came to a halt about before the First World War. According to the author, the factors that led to the demise of muckraking were complex and subtle, which could be summed up as the following ones:the conspiracy by the 'interests' that the muckrakers had exposed; advertising boycott; the potential libel lawsuit and the outbreak of the War as well as the readers'disgust.
