Based on comparison of the 3 starting modes of AC asynchronous motor in drainage pumping station, the starting principle and the features of soft starter have been introduced with Sanhang Rd Rainwater Pumping Station Works of drainage system of Sanlin area as an example. Not only the soft starter could decrease starting current, reduce shock on electrified wire netting and prolong the service life of motor and other equipment, but also it could eliminate thoroughly the 'water-hammer' in pipes. As an appropriate starting mode for pump, the soft starter can see an extensive application future with the rising of performance-price ratio.
