Product Cycle and the North-South Trade

本文是对产品周期模型的一个扩展。南北方之间的创新 -模仿 -再创新的产品周期存在于所有的产业部门中 ,南北贸易结构也由这种产品周期所决定。但是不同产业的内在技术水平是有差异的 ,并且这种技术水平的差异导致了南北方在不同的产业中创新、模仿和制造行为的差异。在引入不同产业技术水平的差异后 ,我们发现南北方这种创新 -模仿 -再创新的产品周期只是发生在技术水平居中的产业中 ,Grossman和 Helpman所考虑的产品周期实际上是本文的一个特例。随着时间的推移 ,由于边干边学效应的存在 ,南北方产品周期和南北方贸易结构随着时间的演进而变化。最后本文还讨论了发展中国家的政府政策对于产品周期和南北贸易结构的影响。

This paper provides an extended model based on Grossman and Helpman. Because of the technological differences acrossindustries, the behaviors of innovations in developed countries and imitations in LDCs show differentpatterns acrossthese industries. When technological differences introduced, we find that the prevalence of product cycle in North-South trade varies across industries spectrum, which maximized in medium-tech industries, and does not exit in both low-tech industries and hi-tech industries. And because of the learning-by-doing effect, North-South trade pattern can evolveover time, which can be affected by policies in LDCs too.
