How Metaphor Impacts on the Syntagmatic and the Paradigmatic Relations

组合关系和聚合关系是语言符号理论研究的核心,任何符号活动都是从纵聚合轴上向横组合轴的投射,而隐喻通过在纵聚合轴上选择关系的扩大而改变了语言单位内的横组合关系,从而创造出新的意义和所指,不仅对这两个关系产生重大影响,而且导致了组合段和聚合体划分界限的模糊。本文拟对隐喻、组合关系、聚合关系三者关系进行论述。

Syntagmatic and paradigmatic relations are at the core of any semiotic representation of language, so much so that all semiotic activities are regarded as the projection from the vertical axis of paradigmatic relations to the horizontal axis of the syntagmatic relations. By means of expanding the alternate choices at the vertical axis and thus changing the syntagmatic relations among linguistic units, metaphor creates new senses. In performing this function, metaphor blurs the boundary between the two categories of fundamental semiotic relations in question.
