There are over 20,000 ancient trees within the territory of Beijing. According to the 1988's third ancient tree census, within the city and suburbs, there are over 3804 trees over three hundred years old, 19,723 trees over one hundred years old, and the ancient trees in the far suburban towns number as many as 50,000. Most of these trees were planted between the Liao-Jin and the Ming-Qing Dynasties. The oldest trees trace back to the Han and Tang Dynasties. Many of these trees are evergreen Cyprus trees, pine trees, and leaf-bearing trees like ginkgo trees, pagoda trees, and jujube trees.
