C.V. Woodward was a very famous historian in the field of American Southern history studies, and he was also active in social activities. He tried to find the root of Southern characters, and make the past useful for the present. The concern was engraved in his history study. He broke new grounds in the Southern history studies, which had great influence on his later colleagues. Although the later comers in the field gave their own explanations to many issues and criticized Woodward's views, theses, and methods, Woodward stood as a monument in the field. In the process of the criticizing and defending, a research climate appeared which was favorable to the advance of American Southern history study. [
