The use of large numbers of water symbols in Meng Haoran's poems indicates and conveys a sense of sorrow and bitterness brought about by the loss of values, with the values of the subjective self as the forever focus. The extensively sentimentalized water images give expression to the relationships between the individual life and society and nature, thus becoming the most appropriate symbols of the poet's personality and poetic spirits. He longs to discard his political ambitions, but can hardly give up his ideal in pursuit of Confucius values. Nevertheless, his character and life attitude still carries much of Taoism, and this consequently forms his splendid profile of “Confucian in character but Taoist in appearance'.
