死亡意识是从生命出发对死亡的恐惧和由之引发的对生存的焦虑。心灵敏感的作家总是比常人具有更强烈的死亡意识。林白作品中的死亡意识表现为肉体死亡和精神死亡状态。肉体死亡使个人得到解脱或通过死亡追求爱情的永恒。追求物欲是人反抗死亡恐惧的手段,但过分追求物欲则使人的精神走向死亡。人的死亡本能转向内部攻击自身会导致自我毁灭,死亡本能转向外部表现为破坏作用,即对外界及他人的破坏或攻击。
