韩礼德和哈桑《英语中的衔接》 (1976 )一书提出了衔接模型 ,书中论述了词汇语法层面的衔接手段 ,也提及了语音的衔接功能 ,但忽略了书写系统 ,比如标点所起的衔接作用。大量的实例证明标点具有指称、省略、词汇衔接和连接功能。像其他衔接手段一样 ,标点的使用同样受到语篇上下文、客观语境等因素的影响。加入标点的衔接功能后 ,韩礼德和哈桑的衔接模型可得到进一步完善。

Halliday and Hasan (1976) posits a model of cohesion. The book focuses on the cohesive devices in the lexicogrammatical stratum, and also mentions phonological cohesion in passing. But they have overlooked the cohesive functions of the orthographic system, which includes punctuations. An abundance of data shows that punctuations do have cohesive functions of reference, ellipsis, lexical cohesion and conjunction. Like other cohesive devices, the use of punctuations is also subject to factors like co-text and the context of the situation depicted. Adding punctuations to Halliday and Hasan's model of cohesion will enlarge the scope for its coverage.
