摘要
《一个青年艺术家的肖像》讲述的不仅仅是主人公与各种社会势力之间的矛盾 ,而且还探索性地剖析了“自我”的矛盾 ,反映的是斯蒂芬自我意识的觉醒及其对文学艺术的新认识。乔伊斯采用主观现实主义手法来为斯蒂芬作传 ,正是为了解决客观真实与主观真实之间的矛盾。主观现实主义在《肖像》中最突出的两个表现是审美中心的内移和有限意识流技巧的运用。《肖像》有别于传统的成长小说 ,乔伊斯对主观现实主义的开拓性运用 ,在结构、风格和技巧上所做的实验 ,都是为了更客观地描述斯蒂芬精神上和艺术上的成长。
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man not only depicts conflicts between the protagonist and different social forces, but also probes into Stephen's mental conflicts and reflects the awakening of the'Self'as well as the artist's new understandings of art and literature. James Joyce's use of subjective realism in his biography for Stephen might be his very solution to the conflicts between objectivity and subjectivity. Two prominent exhibitions of subjective realism in A Portrait are the inward shift of aesthetic center and the restricted use of stream of consciousness. A Portrait differs from other traditional bildungsroman in that Joyce makes an innovative use of subjective realism and experiments with structure, styles and skills in order to delineate Stephen's spiritual awakening and artistic growth more objectively.
