The paper discusses the explanatory power of optimal relevance in the Relevance Theory to utterance communication, arguing and analyzing that discourse coherence involves the listener's cognitive inference and psychological calculation in communication,and that it arises from searching for the relevance among utterances on the part of the participants involved in communication.The paper finally expounds that the process of utterance interpretation is that of deductive inference.
