Cohesion and Coherence in College English Writing

本文根据Halliday关于语篇衔接和连贯理论,对英语专业部分本科生作文中衔接手段和整体连贯情况进行了分析研究,发现句际语义连接词语的使用和逻辑推理、观点阐述及论证等方面存在比较突出的问题.作者建议在英语写作教学中应将这些方面作为一个重要训练内容.

Based on Halliday's theory, this paper analyses the cohesion and coherence in the 50 Chinese college students' English writing. The results indicate that the students have difficulty in using the intersentential connectives and are weak in logical reasoning and argumentation. Therefore the author suggests that the teachers of English writing should focus much on the students' ability development in these respects.
