After a thorough research into the modern dialect and the relative ancient books and records, the author suggested in the essay that the word 'Lao'(佬) in 'Xiangbalao'(乡坝佬) should mean 'Liao(獠), which had the meaning of the nationality 'Liaoren'(獠人) in ancient times.
