Metaphor is the semantic reflection and interaction of two different semantic fields. This paper investigates the cognitive nature and characteristics of metaphor from the generation of catchphrases and the phenomenon of generalization. It specifies the functions of metaphor in the process of generalization and illustrates the possibilities of metaphors to be understood and accepted after being generalized.
