Arylaminobenzimidazole was conveniently synthesized from o-phenylenediamine by condensation-cyclodesulphurization with arylisothiocyanate in the presence of mercuric oxide(or mercuric chloride) and conc hydrochloric acid. The reaction was readily performed with good yields under mild conditions. The new compound 5a was characterized by +1H NMR, MS, IR and elemental analysis.
