Abstract The quantitative analysis of the 27 free anino acids in the plasma in Alzheimer′s disease (AD)group(17 cases),multi-infarct dementia (MID)group(33 cases)and control group was done.The results revealed that 17 amino acids(63.0%)in AD group and 8 amino acids (30.0%)in MID group were statistically significantly different from control group,and sug gested that there was a remarkable dysfunction of the metabolism of plasma amino acids in AD group.The mean concentration of 13(76.5%)from 17 plasma amino acids in AD group was significantly lower(including 5 essential amino acids and 3 side chain amino acids). The decreased mean concentration of some amino acids may indirectly reflect the disturbance of metabolism of amino acid in AD.The correlation of amino acid level between the plasma and brain in AD group need to be further studied.
