Most aspects of mill-wide economic steering operations and their required calculations are presently too complicated, detailed and require a substantial amount of different basic data files, for paper mills to have these made by hand or by using simplified computer programs. The required information is naturally either historical information, based on actualised resource consumptions and costs, or prognosticated information, which requires an adequate and accurate picture, system or model, whereby the individual production runs to be included in the production activities during the period investigated can be predicted accurately enough. This article describes some data requirements of production information, but emphasizes the requirements and properties of a computer program, specifically developed, and also to be used for budgeting and investment planning in the paper industry in general, and paper mills in particular.
