Investigating the Rules Governing the Double Spelling of Consonant Letters

我国英语语法著作中对英语词尾辅音字母双写规则的表述中只讲两个条件 ,即重读闭音节结尾 ;结尾处只有一个辅音字母。但从理论和实践方面考虑 ,应讲三个条件 ,即须在前两个条件后加上一条 :词尾辅音字母前只有一个元音字母。

In almost all English textbooks and writings on English grammar, only two conditions are given to the rule governing double spelling of a consonant letter at the end of the base, that is, the base word must end with a stressed syllable and a single consonant letter. But, theoretically and especially practically, we find a third condition-“a single vowel letter before the ending consonant letter”——seems absolutely necessary to perfect the rule. An improved description is offered accordingly.
