Distributed model for calculating direct solar radiation (DSR) over rugged terrains was developed. The difficult problem of terrain inter-shielding effects has been solved successfully in the model. Based on data integration technique, DSR models for different temporal and spatial scale were established and the accuracy of different models was analyzed thoroughly. Using the selected model, map of direct solar radiation normals with resolution of 1 km 1 km for China are generated, with DEM data as the general characterization of terrain. The DSR is provided in the same way as other kinds of spatial information and can be employed as basic geographic data for relevant studies as well.
