A Treatment of Acronyms in Interpretation from English into Chinese

本文探讨英语缩略词在专业英语口译中的应用范围及处理。文章按学科内容、使用范围和场合把缩略词分为普遍型、专业型、项目型、瞬时型四种 ,并围绕这四种类型着重讨论了译前准备中的注意事项。作者借鉴口译理论、社会语言学、词汇学 ,并根据多年的口译实践经验 ,提出了按简易原则来处理缩略词的翻译表述方式。这些方式包括只译原文中心词、用中文的缩略词翻译。

This paper studies the scope and methods in treatment of acronyms in professional interpretation from English into Chinese. It discusses the important issues to be addressed in interpretation preparation of English acronyms, which have been classified into four types. Drawing on some theories of interpretation, sociolinguistics, lexicology and the author's personal interpretation experience, he proposes a Principle of Simplicity in interpreting English acronyms and some specific expressive ways in interpretation that include interpreting only the central meaning of the original English acronym, using an equivalent Chinese acronymic expression and directly using the English acronym.
