Owing to her insightful perception of the syndromes of modernism, Zhang Ailing has demonstrated in her novels three significant themes that are by nature interrelated: firstly, the absolute isolation and solitude; secondly, the void and fallaciousness of the world; thirdly, the insanity of women in incarceration. The foregoing themes are all closely (associated) with the writer's unique experience of life.
